Uncover the Unique Fitness of Sumo Wrestling in California
Sumo wrestling might seem worlds apart from Southern California’s typical fitness scene, but for members of Honu Sumo, it's the ultimate blend of power, community, and tradition. We recently spoke with Nathan Becraft, a dedicated club member, about how this ancient sport has become a thriving practice right here in San Diego.
Growing up in Japan, Nathan was captivated by sumo early on, watching the rise of legendary wrestler Konishiki. A trip back to Japan to watch a live sumo tournament reignited that childhood fascination. Upon returning to San Diego, he found Honu Sumo, a community dedicated to sumo wrestling. Here, he reconnected with the strength, balance, and cultural depth of the sport.
Nathan describes his experience at Honu Sumo as much more than just physical training. “I expected a serious, intense vibe,” he shares, “but instead, I found an incredibly supportive community. Sumo isn’t only about physical power; it’s about camaraderie, shared goals, and constant self-improvement.” His story showcases the unique benefits of sumo for people of all backgrounds, regardless of age or experience.
What Makes Sumo Special? Sumo provides a dynamic workout, blending power and balance with tradition. Honu Sumo even encourages young kids to participate, which Nathan believes is essential for growing the sport in America. “If we want sumo to thrive here, we need to start with the kids. Just imagine sumo as popular as football!” Nathan says, laughing. "Competing in events like the SoCal Sumo Open has added another level of excitement. “Competing is humbling but inspiring," he adds. "And it’s amazing to represent the middle-aged sumo enthusiasts!”
