Kellyann Ball: Trailblazer in Sumo Wrestling

In the world of American sumo wrestling, few have achieved the recognition and respect that Kellyann Ball has earned. Known as “Sumo Bola,” Kellyann is the most decorated female sumo wrestler in American history, a champion who balances humility with a fierce competitive spirit. When asked how it feels to be in her position, Kellyann admits that imposter syndrome occasionally strikes. “Every once in a while, it hits me,” she shares, but her accomplishments are undeniable and inspiring.
Recently, Kellyann competed at the World Combat Games, where she took silver in the heavyweight division. She notes the elevated level of competition, especially as heavy and open weights are combined, but her remarkable performance showed her strength and dedication. Despite facing seasoned international athletes, Kellyann’s resilience led her to victory, and she recounts celebrating with fellow competitor Christina. "I wasn’t even worried the next day; I was just proud and relaxed, having earned my place."

One standout moment for Kellyann was her "battle scar" from a match that left her with a minor nose injury, a reminder of her perseverance in the ring. But her journey is not without its emotional highs. Reflecting on her coach Yama’s support, even from afar, she describes the heartfelt pride he felt watching her success. “All I want is to make my sensei proud,” she says, underscoring her deep respect for her coaches.
Looking forward, Kellyann dreams of seeing American sumo continue to grow, welcoming athletes of all ages and styles to create a more competitive and inclusive community. Her hope is that the next generation, including juniors, will carry the torch and elevate the sport to new heights on the world stage.

In an ideal world, Kellyann would compete in the Scottish Open, which she views as an exciting opportunity to test her skills internationally. But for now, she’s focused on encouraging people to give sumo a try. “Sumo is a fantastic community,” she says. “It’s great exercise, inclusive of all ages and genders, and something everyone should try at least once.”
